Larger wavelengths suit hydrodynamics of carangiform swimmers

چکیده

We examine the connection between physiology and wavy kinematics of carangiform swimmers, such as Jack, Tuna, Sunfish. Using high-fidelity numerical simulations for flows over Jack Fish models obtained through reconstruction high-speed images real natural it was revealed that undulation with larger wavelengths improves hydrodynamic performance swimmer in terms better thrust production by caudal fin, lower drag on trunk, reduced power consumption trunk.

Effect of the Fast-Skin swim suit on Iranian elite female swimmers' performance

The purpose of this investigation was to consider the Fast-Skin swimsuit's effect on the elite female swimmers’ performance. So, twelve elite swimmers swam 50 and 200 m and 400 m trials with and without Fast-Skin at approximately 80- 100% of maximal effort in four swimming styles. In 400 m freestyle swimming, traditional swimsuit compared with shoulder-to-ankle (SA) and shoulder-to-knee (S...

Numerical investigation of the hydrodynamics of carangiform swimming in the transitional and inertial flow regimes.

We employ numerical simulation to investigate the hydrodynamics of carangiform locomotion as the relative magnitude of viscous and inertial forces, i.e. the Reynolds number (Re), and the tail-beat frequency, i.e. the Strouhal number (St), are systematically varied. The model fish is a three-dimensional (3D) mackerel-like flexible body undulating with prescribed experimental kinematics of carang...

On the role of form and kinematics on the hydrodynamics of self-propelled body/caudal fin swimming.

We carry out fluid-structure interaction simulations of self-propelled virtual swimmers to investigate the effects of body shape (form) and kinematics on the hydrodynamics of undulatory swimming. To separate the effects of form and kinematics, we employ four different virtual swimmers: a carangiform swimmer (i.e. a mackerel swimming like mackerel do in nature); an anguilliform swimmer (i.e. a l...

Numerical investigation of the hydrodynamics of anguilliform swimming in the transitional and inertial flow regimes.

We employ numerical simulation to investigate the hydrodynamic performance of anguilliform locomotion and compare it with that of carangiform swimming as the Reynolds number (Re) and the tail-beat frequency (Strouhal number, St) are systematically varied. The virtual swimmer is a 3-D lamprey-like flexible body undulating with prescribed experimental kinematics of anguilliform type. Simulations ...

The hydrodynamics of eel swimming: I. Wake structure.

Eels undulate a larger portion of their bodies while swimming than many other fishes, but the hydrodynamic consequences of this swimming mode are poorly understood. In this study, we examine in detail the hydrodynamics of American eels (Anguilla rostrata) swimming steadily at 1.4 L s(-1) and compare them with previous results from other fishes. We performed high-resolution particle image veloci...
